Preparing for Maputo!

August 23, 2011

Yet another adventure is headed our way as my coaching of Rwanda’s National Tae Kwon Do team becomes legitimized by our upcoming inclusion in the All Africa Games.  We have two stellar players who are at this moment preparing for these continental games and the great opportunity of performing on the international sporting stage on behalf of their beloved Rwanda.  I am training Eugene Ntawagundi and Dr. David Hakizimana, who also happens to be the president of the Rwanda Tae Kwon Do Federation as well as head physician for ICU at the main hospital in Musanze, Rwanda.  We have three weeks to go and things are looking great for the players.  I drive to Musanze now twice per week giving me four training sessions with them.  They continue to improve in speed, strength, and knowledge of the sport.  Our preparation this week includes selecting and buying “Rwanda Team” clothes and picking up our Rwanda Service Passports.  I do solicit your prayers for wisdom and guidance from God as this small thing that we began has now grown into something so much larger than we could have imagined.  Also pray for the blessings this could be for these players and for Rwanda itself.  David is a genocide orphan who lost all but a grandmother and sister in the genocide and the grandmother this last weekend has just passed away.  As well, Rwanda hasn’t won a medal in the All Africa Games since 1987.  Could you imagine the celebration if we were able not only to represent Rwanda well, but if we were actually able to bring home a medal?

Hi Marty – I guess I first need to introduce myself. My name is Robin Been; my family lives and ministers in Northern Mozambique. I met Louise when she can down to SA for the Come Before Winter. Anyway my entire family is currently in South Africa – getting ready to head home next wk (as soon as we get things finished on our car). I saw that you’re coming down with the team you’re training. Wondering when you’ll be in Maputo and how busy you’ll be. It might be interesting to meet up just to say Hi. We started our family learning Taekwondo with an instructor in Nampula after I talked with Louise about you guys starting to learn as a family, etc and how you balanced or rather re-captured the tenants for Christ. Anyway – if we don’t meet up – have a great time in Maputo at the games and blessings on your ministry in all facets.
