Advancement for Rwanda’s Tae Kwon Do

August 21, 2011

In late June, after months of preparation and training twenty-two hopefuls stepped onto the mats with a desire to advance in the art and sport of Tae Kwon Do.  This group included three foreign nationals from the US and from Norway and the rest were Rwandan.  Six of the original seven Rwandan masters were back to advance to 2nd degree black belt and the rest were there for their big moment of transition from red to black.  I was there as well along with Grand Master Lee who had flown in for the occasion from Korea.  My role was to conduct the tests and confer with Master Lee about the students.  Most of those taking the test were in their early twenties with a few pushing thirty.  Two of those being tested were Tucker and Taylor our first two sons who were advancing to 2nd degree at the ripe old ages of 16 and 14.  The tests included sparring, self-defense, board breaking, and specific routines designed to show their mastery of the movements.  The individual aspects of the test are challenging enough, but when all are combined together they can become extremely difficult.  It is a humbling test to go through and in the end I don’t know of any student that would feel as though he or she deserved the rank they had advanced to.  Well, after four hours of very efficient testing the players had all passed and the celebrations began as Rwanda’s Tae Kwon Do more than doubled its number of masters.

So, what does this mean for our mission and work here in Rwanda?  We have all known that the kingdom advances through relationship and influence. As well we have seen in this last two years the mysterious working of God in using something like Tae Kwon Do to advance his kingdom.  Well, the short of it is this.  The Tae Kwon Do community is growing in Rwanda.  With that growth we have an ever expanding opportunity for relationships that will develop into disciple makers who will then begin families for Christ in all regions of Rwanda.  Even now several of these masters are beginning their studies under the Great Lord and Master Jesus Christ.
